Twin Earthquakes Affect Thousands in Southern Philippines
(MENAFN) More than 8,400 people were affected after two powerful earthquakes struck the southern Philippines within hours on Friday, according to a preliminary situation report released Saturday.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), cited by the Inquirer, reported that 1,265 residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure, while 7,915 people remain displaced in the aftermath of the seismic events.
At least eight fatalities have been confirmed.
The first earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.4, followed hours later by a 6.7-magnitude tremor near the southern Mindanao region. The initial quake prompted a tsunami warning, which was later rescinded, but not before coastal evacuations were carried out.
Damage assessments are ongoing, but authorities have confirmed that 33 houses sustained damage due to the powerful jolts.
Since the main shocks, a total of 792 aftershocks have been recorded as of Saturday morning, intensifying concerns over stability in the region.
