ICC Rejects Duterte Appeal, Confirms Court Jurisdiction

(MENAFN) The Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court has dismissed an appeal challenging its authority over a case involving former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, as stated by reports.

The ruling confirms that the court retains jurisdiction over allegations tied to crimes against humanity connected to extrajudicial killings during Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, according to reports.

This decision follows an earlier ruling by the Pre-Trial Chamber, which had already upheld the ICC’s authority in the case. The Appeals Chamber’s verdict effectively closes the jurisdictional dispute, as stated by reports.

Judges issued separate opinions on different legal questions, with unanimous agreement on some points and a dissenting view on at least one aspect of the decision.

The dissent was filed by Judge Gocha Lordkipanidze of Georgia, who had also opposed an earlier jurisdiction ruling in 2023, according to reports.

The proceedings were closely followed by victims of the anti-drug campaign in the Philippines, many of whom observed the hearing remotely, as stated by reports.

With jurisdiction now settled, the case is expected to move forward to the next phase, which will focus on the confirmation of charges against Duterte.
